Jamel Howard Commits to Wisconsin

When Wisconsin offered Chicago (Ill.) Marist defensive tackle Jamel Howard in May, the Badgers immediately put themselves into the driver’s set. Following Howard’s official visit last weekend, UW finished the job, landing the massive 6-foot-3, 320-pound junior, who they plan to use in the middle of their 3-4 defense.

“I just thinking, ‘Man, I really got an offer from Wisconsin,'” Howard told Badger247 upon receiving his UW offer. “I was just in shock.”

“I just want to be put in a position to succeed,” he added. “Wisconsin has a really good program and a really good system for that. I’m really excited I got the chance to be extended a scholarship.”

Howard chose the Badgers over Illinois, Iowa State, and a host of MAC programs. assistant coach Ross Kolodziej landed the three-star defensive lineman for UW.

“He really just felt like I fit Wisconsin’s game plan,” Howard explained. “He felt like I was a great character guy. He just really put an emphasis on the fit for me.”

Howard is commitment No. 12 for the Badgers in their 2023 recruiting class.

“Honestly, I’ve always been a Wisconsin fan,” he said. “Always liked their defense. Every time I see Wisconsin’s defense, they always have really good linebackers, really good guys up front.

“I was a fan of a bunch of teams growing up. Wisconsin always had the best defense. Always had the hardest hitting linebackers, the best fillers, some of the toughest guys in the Big Ten.

“I like the toughness of football. I feel like their team is mentally and physically tough.”

UW has been cleaning up in the state of Illinois as of late. Howard is the fourth prospect from the Land of Lincoln to commit to the Badgers in the 2023 class, joining Tyler Jansey (Batavia), Roderick Pierce (Brother Rice), and Justin Taylor (Nazareth Academy). For reference, UW hasn’t signed four Illinois natives in one recruiting class since 2008.

Per 247sports, Howard is the nation’s No. 100 ranked defensive lineman in the class of 2023.
