GoFundMe for disparaged Burger King employee raises over $60K

Kevin Ford may just have it his way, after all.

A crowdsourcing fundraising campaign for the veteran Burger King employee who went viral earlier this week is turning out to be a whopper of riches.

Over $60,000 has been raised in support of the Las Vegas McCarran International Airport fast food worker who dedicated 27 years to the burger chain — and in exchange for “his loyalty …and never missing a day,” he received a gift bag, which included one movie ticket, Life Savers and a bag of Reese’s Pieces candy, a Starbucks cup and a couple of pens, among other items stuffed into a clear, plastic backpack.

Ford’s daughter Seryna started a GoFundMe page, noting how through the decades of hard work, her pappy managed to provide for his family and put four daughters through college.

“He originally began working at this job as a single father when he [gained] custody of me and my older sister 27 years ago. Then as our family grew and he remarried, he continue [d] to work here because of the amazing health insurance that was provided through this employer because it was unionized,” she wrote on the fundraiser’s page. “Which got all four of his daughters through high school and college with full healthcare coverage.”

“My dad continues to work here, because though he does look young, he is coming up on retirement age and leaving would cost him his retirement,” she continued. “In no way are we asking for money or is he expecting any money but if anyone feels like blessing him he would love to visit his grandchildren.”

By mid-afternoon Friday, the campaign for the 54-year-old grandfather amassed more than its initial $50,000 goal, and was extended to $75,000.

One big-ticket donor turned out to be comedian David Spade, who doled out $5,000.

According to a TMZ screengrab of Instagram DMs between the two, Ford told the “Tommy Boy” star that he “Cannot believe this!!” “I think I might be able to take a day off,” to which Spade replied, “Wait until year 30.”

The dedicated worker reportedly told the gossip site he plans to spend some of the money to visit his grandkids in Texas and buy a hybrid car.

A Burger King spokesperson issued the following statement Friday: “The Burger King brand and its many franchisees nationwide are committed to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of the thousands of people serving across a wide range of roles — all dedicated to providing our Guests a world- class experience.”

“Following review with this location’s franchisee, we’ve learned that this video depicts a Team Member in receipt of a peer-to-peer reward in recognition of a short-term positive performance / experience,” the statement continued. “The franchisee offers its Team Members a robust employee recognition program, which includes the recognition of tenure milestones and monetary awards.”
